Learning is Active
  • Tell me, I forget.
  • Show me, I remember.
  • Involve me, I understand.
The source of this pearl of wisdom is unknown. However it is important to involve people in the learning process. When they become active participants, the learning focus changes from "getting through the activity" to developing keyboarding skills. In short, learning becomes fun.

Take a break – check out these fun activities. It doesn't take that long, and it is time well spent.

Pay Attention!!

You are not even pretending to read these Tips .. Are you??
I know I repeat myself... But after the typing games,
would you at least glance at these tips?

Target Speed.   After completion of an exercise, speed and accuracy are shown. The Nimble Fingers series of program uses the concept of target speed. Did you reach the target speed? It is not easy. In fact it will take a lot of practice. Target speed is based on your keyboarding speed in words per minute. The computer has several messages to display, depending on your performance.

Preparation.   Accuracy is possible only when the equipment is correctly placed and you maintain the correct posture. Otherwise, errors will occur.

Touch Typing.   requires practice. You can do it! Just follow the directions in nimble fingers.

Chair height.   An adjustable chair is preferred to allow for a comfortable, natural distance between chair, desk and monitor.

Material on right.   Material to be keyed should be on the right and elevated for reading ease.

Uncluttered table.   The table should be free of unneeded books or distractions. Direct your full attention to the material and do not let your eyes or mind wander. Also, when extra paper is removed from the work environment, glare is reduced.

Keyboard height.   If the keyboard is too high (i.e., chair too low) errors tend to occur in the top keyboard rows. If the keyboard is too low (i.e., chair too high) errors tend to occur on the bottom keyboard rows.

Elbows in.   Elbows should be relaxed and near your body. If your elbows are spread outward, the first finger (the index finger) tends to glide off the keys.

Arms reaching up.   Your arms should reach up to the keyboard at the same slant as the keyboard. Wrists should be low, with fingers curved. If your wrists are bent, errors tend to occur on the bottom row. If your wrists sag, top-row errors are likely. Do not rest your wrists on the table top or keyboard. Keep the wrists up, at a constant angle with the keyboard.

Error reduction.   If errors are occurring on the bottom-row keys, move your chair back from the keyboard and slightly raise your wrists.

Use the correct finger-keystroke.   Study the pictures in the Nimble Fingers touch typing program to know which finger to use. Whisper each letter before striking the key.

Check your hands!   Your fingers should be on the home-row keys and your hands should slant at the same angle as the keyboard. Do not let your wrists become lazy and rest against the desk or the keyboard.

How about a touch typing exercise on airplanes?
The ailerons are airfoils located on the trailing edge of each wing.
Ailerons control the movement of the aircraft on its longitudinal axis.
When the left aileron is applied, the aircraft banks to the left. That
is, the aircraft's left wing is lowered. By itself, this does not produce
a turn. In fact, the horizon remains level. Adjustments are then made
with the rudder to produce a smooth, but never quick, turn.

Or an exercise on parasitic plants?
Parasitic plants exist on other living plants. They
squeeze and suck all their nutrients from the host plant
on which they are attached and grow. They have root-like
organs that penetrate the stem or roots of the host. They
then suck the juicy nutrients from the host for their own
basic growth. They do not produce their own food and juices.

Or an exercise on roots?
Roots are the underground parts of plants. Roots anchor
the plants in the soil. Roots absorb water and minerals.
Finally, roots are part of the plant's amazing transportation
system that exports water and minerals up to the stems and
leaves. Some roots, like juicy carrots and beets, are food
stores that can be quickly eaten when needed.

Or an exercise on carbon compounds?
There are millions of carbon compounds. All living
things contain a mixture of carbons. The study of
substances containing carbon is known as organic
chemistry. Oil is just a mixture of carbon compounds.
The compounds vaporize when heated and quickly
produce a mixture of obnoxious, explosive gasses.

Or a serious typing exercise on sound?
A sound is loud because of a change in pressure. The
greater the exposure to pressure change of a wave,
the louder the sound. Sounds are measured in decibels.
Sounds have pitch and frequency which are measured
in hertz. As musicians know, by adjusting these
variables, numerous unique sounds can be created.
