Touch typing - keyboarding speed and dexterity exercises

Do you want Nimble typing Fingers ?

If so, you must have flexible hands. So, let's flex those hands and develop finger dexterity! Of course, others will think you are half crazy. Tell them you saw these exercises at nimblefingers.com.
The Exercise
  1. Touch your left and right-hand fingers and thumbs together.
  2. Stretch and flex your fingers.
  3. Now, pretend you are a spider.
  4. Do your "spider push-ups!"
  5. OK? Can you give me 20 quick push-ups?

Do not type with your fingernails. Use the pad of your fingers and strike the keys squarely and quickly. After the basic keystrokes are mastered, practice is needed to "lock in" the newly acquired skills. We have hundreds of fun exercises that can be used for practice.

On each individual keystroke, always use the correct finger-keystroke reach, and make your fingers behave correctly. Always strike (not push) each key quickly. Please do not rest your wrists on the desk or keyboard.

Touch typing - keyboarding speed and dexterity tips

Accuracy demands concentration.   If you don't concentrate, errors will occur.

Key the exercises in the order shown.   Learn the beginning key reaches before proceeding with the other data entry topics.

You can do it!   You can learn how to type. It just requires practice and Nimble Fingers.

Type smooth!  Key at a smooth, easy pace.

Quiet, organized work area.   The area where data entry is performed, should be free of clutter, and should be without distractions.

GIGO!   Garbage In - Garbage Out! The accuracy of an information system is only as accurate as the data entered into the system.

Positive attitude.   Learning can be fun. If you have a positive attitude.

Smile!   It releases tensions and makes for a happy environment.

Keep those nails trimmed.   Fingernails should be very small. You simply cannot enter data accurately with long fingernails.

Practice makes perfect.   Concentrate on accuracy. Speed will occur with practice.

Be patient.   Once the correct finger-keystroke patterns are used, speed and accuracy occur naturally.

Develop a routine.   Set the work environment like you want it to optimize your learning sessions. Don’t let the chair height; tilt of the monitor, location of the keyboard or posture vary from session to session.

Learning to type.   You learn how to type by developing motor reflex patterns When these reflex patterns occur, your fingers will be able to strike the correct keys automatically.

Avoid eyestrain.   Eyestrain can occur when there is a reflection on the computer monitor.

Speed and accuracy will develop.   Relax when keying the beginning exercises. Speed and accuracy will develop naturally through practice once your fingers have been correctly trained.

Finger dexterity.   Try the finger dexterity exercises in the Healthy Typing section.

Check your hands!   Your fingers should be on the home-row keys and your hands should slant at the same angle as the keyboard. Do not let your wrists become lazy and rest against the desk or the keyboard.

More practice needed?   Retype the exercises several times until satisfied with your typing skills.

Set up a schedule.   Unless you establish a "schedule for learning" it is all to easy to find an excuse for not practicing. It takes practice to develop touch-keyboarding skills.

Don't rush.   Only go to the next exercise when you are comfortable.

Be patient.   Once the correct finger-keystroke patterns are used, speed and accuracy occur naturally.

Keyboard height.   If the keyboard is too high (i.e., chair too low) errors tend to occur in the top keyboard rows. If the keyboard is too low (i.e., chair too high) errors tend to occur on the bottom keyboard rows.

Develop a routine.   Set the work environment like you want it to optimize your learning sessions. Do not let the chair height; tilt of the monitor; location of the keyboard, or posture vary from session to session.

Fun!   The finger coordination and stress reducting exercises, will help reduce tensions, and they often produce a smile. Try them.
