Touch typing - keyboarding finger typing dexterity exercises

Can you do it? Make
your fingers move as shown!
This will require practice.
Lots of practice!

These left-hand exercises are tricky. Don't feel bad if you can't figure them out. Practice is required to develop the Nimble typing Fingers that are needed for keyboarding activities.

The
Flash Cards option in the NimbleFingers program can help you develop keyboarding skills. As simple words "flash" on the screen, think and type the word as a whole. This will help build your speed and accuracy in keyboarding common words.

Touch typing - keyboarding finger exercises

Use the correct finger when striking a key.   When first learning to type, concentrate on striking the correct keys without looking at your fingers. Do not be too concerned with speed or accuracy—they will improve as your skills develop.

Errors will happen.   When an error is made, retype the key immediately! Don’t think about it, your brain knows it did not communicate correctly with your finger. Just retype the key and move on!

Take care.   The home row exercises are simple and you might be tempted to skip them. However these are very important exercises because you are beginning to train your fingers in the correct keystroke reaches.

Preparation.   Accuracy is possible only when the equipment is correctly placed and you maintain the correct posture. Otherwise, errors will occur. There is a proper relationship between the user and the equipment.

Chair height.   An adjustable chair is preferred to allow for a comfortable, natural distance between chair, desk and monitor.

Material on right.   Material to be keyed should be on the right and elevated for reading ease.

Positive attitude.   Learning can be fun. If you have a positive attitude.

Smile!   It releases tensions and makes for a happy environment.

Uncluttered.   The table should be free of unneeded books or distractions. Direct your full attention to the material and do not let your eyes or mind wander. Also, when extra paper is removed from the work environment, glare is reduced.

Keyboard height.   If the keyboard is too high (i.e., chair too low) errors tend to occur in the top keyboard rows. If the keyboard is too low (i.e., chair too high) errors tend to occur on the bottom keyboard rows.

Tired?   When tired, take a break. Fatigue can result in your concentration wandering, and when this happens, you are not doing a good job of training your fingers. Come back to this web site, and practice the exercises shown to relieve stress and tension.

Be patient.   Once the correct finger-keystroke patterns are used, speed and accuracy occur naturally.

Time Out! After completing several exercises, take a break. Ask yourself how you are doing? Do not keyboard for more than an hour at a time, as you might become tense and tired.

Smooth keys!   Strike the keys at a smooth, steady pace.

GIGO!   Garbage In -- Garbage Out! The accuracy of an information system is only as accurate as the data entered into the system.

Elbows tight.   Elbows should be relaxed and near your body. If your elbows are spread outward, the first finger (the index finger) tends to glide off the keys.
