Touch typing - keyboarding samba exercise

Oh Boy! This requires practice!

  • Place your fingers on the desk.
  • Make your fingers move as shown.
  • Keep all other fingers still, when moving
    (typing) the desired finger.

It will take a moment to "figure out the steps."

  • This touch typing exercise will improve finger coordination and dexterity. By repeatedly practicing an exercise, you are developing motor reflex patterns that "put your brain" in charge of your fingers. When practicing these exercise, please follow the hints at the bottom of the page.

There are a lot of these fun exercises in this web site to provide you with an opportunity to "train your fingers" to develop the coordination needed in keyboarding. Be patient and practice these exercises as often as needed.

Don't become discouraged if you do not quickly master these exercises. Your fingers are not use to your brain being in charge, and the little critters don't like it when told what to do. Happy keyboarding!

Touch typing - keyboarding samba exercise

YES the Samba!   The samba is a tricky finger dexterity exercise.

Relax and stretch.   Periodically get up and move or stretch your neck, arm, and hand muscles to combat fatigue.

Clear your brain and practice.   Spend five minutes a day on warm up and speed building drills. At first, think each letter. Eventually, think and type the word.

Target Speed.   After completing an exercise, speed and accuracy are shown. The Nimble Fingers series of touch typing - keyboarding programs using the concept of target speed. Did you reach the target speed? It is not easy; in fact it will take a lot of practice. Target speed is based on your speed in words per minute. The computer has several messages to display, depending on your performance.

    Target speed examples.

Not up to target speed.   You type less than 10 words per minute. Unless this is the first couple of exercises, you can do better! Try the exercise again to see if improvements can be made.

Almost missed target speed range.   You type between 10 and 14 words per minute. If you are concentrating on using the correct fingers to strike the keys, you probably will be typing in this slow-speed range. Don’t worry, speed will improve if you concentrate on using the correct fingers.

Almost a bull’s eye.   You typed 15 to 19 words per minute.

Bull’s eye.   You reached the target speed. You type 20 to 24 words per minute. For a beginner, that’s “heavenly typing.”

Exceeded target speed with no errors.   You type at a speed of 25 or more words per minute with no errors.

Check your hands!   Your fingers should be on the home-row keys and your hands should slant at the same angle as the keyboard. Do not let your wrists become lazy and rest against the desk or the keyboard.

Re-key an exercise if you are not satisfied.   After completing the beginning exercises, using the correct finger should be automatic. If you still have to look at the keyboard when you type a particular key, rerun the appropriate exercise.

Be patient.   Speed and accuracy occur once the correct finger-keystroke patterns become automatic.

Smile!   It releases tensions and makes for a happy environment.

Type without looking at the keys.   Use a quick stroke to strike each key. Do not press or mash the key. Strike the key quickly and move on!

Sit erect.   Your feet should be flat on the floor. Poor posture is tiring and leads to errors.

Set up a schedule.   Unless you establish a "schedule for learning" it is all to easy to find an excuse for not practicing.

Do you have an extra fifteen minutes?   Then you can complete a couple of practice exercises. It might not sound like much, but you have helped develop your typing skills.

Try the dexterity exercises.   Try the physical exercises on finger dexterity exercises and stretching. It is a moral boster.

The two-step?   Check out the finger dexterity called the two- step.

Check your hands!   Your fingers should be on the home-row keys and your hands should slant at the same angle as the keyboard. Do not let your wrists become lazy and rest against the desk or the keyboard.
